Fix slow running computer - In todays post I am going to talk about how to speed up a pc, if you notice it is starting to run slow or freezing or lockingup
One of the most simplest ways to get your PC running back to its normal self, is to limit the number of applications that are set to run on start up.
One of the main reasons why PC run slow, as there are too many programs set to run on startup, and if any of these programs runs slows or does not respond, it makes your entire PC ruin slow.
By following the below steps, you will see an improvement in the performance of your PC.
Done!
You PC will now run faster than it did before as less programs are in your startup. Thus you computer will not lockup or keep freezing as much.
This is completely safe procedure and you can still access all of your programs via the usual way of Start->All Programs.
If this does not help, then the next step is to run a Windows System File Scan.
The Windows System File Checker (SFC for short) scans all protected PC system files & replaces the corrupted files with the right ones, thus resulting in your PC running quicker.

I did the first procedure but I was afraid to do “disable all”, as per your instruction, because I didn’t know what half of the ticked-off file names were for. So I just unticked those file names I knew and that I didn’t need and then did the rest of the instructions and, yes, the computer is already running faster. So, thanks.
My question is: I would still like to delete any more applications that are set to run on start-up but that aren’t necessary…BUT THE PROBLEM IS I DON’T KNOW HOW TO IDENTIFY WHAT THEY ARE BY THE NAMES LISTED UNDER THE STARTUP TAB!
Do you know of any way I can find out what each of those names ticked off under the startup tab represent so that I can then decide whether I need them to run at startup?
I thank you in advance for your response to my query…

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the Q.
Firstly, don’t be to concerned about the effects of ticking or unticking items in the MSCONFIG startup. When you untick an item you are simply stopping it from running during startup, and it is impossible to delete software from your PC using this method. So if you accidently untick the item, simply go back and tick it again, no harm done.
I find the easiest way to identify the item that you want to tick or untick, is to expand the width of the “Command” column so you can see the names of the files and folders. eg c:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe – This is the Windows Messenger Application.
So simply go through the list and you will be able to identify many of the programs, as they will correspond to the ones currently installed on your PC.
If in doubt, don’t touch it and skip to the next one. Just remember to ensure your internet security, firewall, and antivirus software are ticked so they always run on startup.
